Correctional officers stopped a person in custody attempting to hang himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (December 12).
During a patrol at about 10.05pm, the officers noticed that the 51-year-old male person in custody was trying to hang himself by tying a bed sheet to the grille gate of his dormitory. The officers immediately stopped him and called for reinforcement.
The person in custody sustained no injury. He was sent to the centre hospital for examination and observation. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of burglary.
