Correctional Services officers stopped a person in custody from hurting himself in Stanley Prison today (January 3).
At about 8.30am, the 40-year-old male person in custody cut his neck and left wrist with a plastic spoon in the centre hospital ward. Officers at the scene stopped him immediately and arranged for medical treatment in centre hospital.
After preliminary examination and treatment, he was transferred to a public hospital for further observation. A department clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The person in custody was sentenced for an offence of burglary.
