Correctional Services officers stopped a newly admitted remand person in custody hurting himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (March 6).
At about 4.57pm, the 38-year-old male remand person in custody who was a ketamine addict suddenly punched his own face during an admission search. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him, but he lost control and continued to hurt himself. The remand person in custody was finally subdued with the use of Oleoresin Capsicum Foam Spray.
The remand person in custody sustained minor face injury and was treated at the centre hospital. A departmental clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The person in custody was remanded for the offence of assault and resisting a police officer.
