Correctional officers discover remand person in custody committing self-harm

Correctional Services officers found a remand person in custody hurting himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (June 22).

At 11.55am, an officer found a 42-year-old male remand person in custody who was a drug addict lying on the floor of his cell inside the centre hospital with injuries on head and shoulder. The officer entered to the cell immediately and applied first aid to the remand person in custody, who was conscious at the time. Upon enquiry, the remand person in custody told the officer that he had jumped from the wash basin in the cell to hurt himself.

After preliminary examination and treatment, he was transferred to a public hospital for further observation. A department clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was remanded for an offence of publishing obscene article.
