Press Release

Correctional Services Department to launch Assistant Officer II recruitment exercise

The Correctional Services Department (CSD) will launch a new round of its recruitment exercise tomorrow (July 18) to recruit 240 Assistant Officers II, the Principal of the CSD Staff Training Institute, Mr Lee Kwok-po, said today (July 17).

Candidates are required to undergo a physical fitness test, a group interview, an aptitude test, the Basic Law test and a final interview.

Mr Lee said the theme of the recruitment drive this year is "Same Mission, Marvellous Tasks". Through protecting the public and reducing crime, the CSD, together with other government departments, serves society. A correctional officer has three specific roles, namely serving as a guardian of society, a rehabilitation facilitator and a community educator. To achieve these tasks, correctional officers help persons in custody to rehabilitate and seek public engagement and support for rehabilitated persons so as to minimise the risk of re-offending. As a result, the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong will be greatly enhanced.

Mr Lee pointed out that in order to further raise the custodial and rehabilitation services of the department, the CSD has recruited non-ethnic Chinese officers in recent years as well as other talented people from various areas. The department wants to share positive energy with persons in custody through new recruits who have faith in their beliefs and show perseverance so that the persons in custody can face difficulties with a positive attitude and change their values in life.

Mr Lee said experience shows that only about 50 per cent of candidates pass the physical fitness test. Therefore, he suggested that applicants should enhance their physical fitness through training and refer to the video clips on the demonstration of the physical fitness test items in the CSD's website. In addition, applicants should pay more attention to current affairs, especially those related to the department, and good communication and analytical skills are also essential.

He said new recruits will undergo 23 weeks of residential training in the Staff Training Institute. The recruit training programme covers the laws of Hong Kong and academic subjects, such as sociology, counselling and psychology. It also covers scenario training, foot drills, physical fitness training, self-defence, weapons training, first-aid training, helicopter training and emergency response training.

To meet daily operational needs, scenario training and mock exercises are provided for new recruits so they can learn how to operate various types of security equipment and respond to emergency situations, Mr Lee said.

Further information about the entry requirements and other details of the post of Assistant Officer II will be available on the CSD's website (www.csd.gov.hk) from tomorrow.
