Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs into reception centre

     Correctional officers intercepted the smuggling of a quantity of suspected dangerous drugs concealed inside the body of a remand person in custody in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (July 20).

     Upon admission to the institution yesterday, the 59-year-old male remand person in custody underwent X-ray body scanning and was put under close monitoring as he was suspected to have swallowed some drugs.

     At 10.28am today, he discharged one pack of suspected dangerous drug weighing 24.96 grammes wrapped in plastic sheets. The man was remanded for the offence of possession with dangerous drugs.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     A spokesperson for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

     There have been 54 seizures of dangerous drugs by correctional officers to date this year.
