Correctional officers stop person in custody committing self-harm

     Correctional Services officers stopped a male person in custody committing self-harm in Stanley Prison today (August 14).

     At 9.30am, the 37-year-old person in custody suddenly turned emotional in the corridor outside his cell. He banged his head against the wall. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him but encountered serious resistance. The officers subsequently used oleoresin capsicum foam to prevent him from hurting himself further. The reinforced staff sent him to the centre hospital for medical treatment. The person in custody was later transferred to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for further assessment.

     A spokesman for the department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

     The person in custody was sentenced for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.
