Persons in custody at Cape Collinson Correctional Institution attain good examination results

     Thirty-five persons in custody at Cape Collinson Correctional Institution (CCCI) of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) were presented with certificates at a ceremony in recognition of their study efforts and achievements today (September 24).

     In the past year, 123 persons in custody from the institution sat for various academic and vocational examinations including the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination, examinations of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music and examinations covering the subjects of Chinese Word Processing, Basic Electrical Installation, Local Caf Operation and Service and Plumber Intermediate Trade Test organised by the City and Guilds International Limited, the Vocational Training Council, Caritas Hong Kong and the Construction Industry Council Training Academy respectively. They achieved 77 merits out of 290 certificates obtained. Among the candidates, seven persons in custody sat a total of 42 papers for this year's HKDSE Examination. All of them obtained level 2 or above in all of their six papers and they have successfully enrolled in post-secondary programmes of tertiary education institutions.

     A total of 35 young persons in custody were presented with 103 certificates today, including 26 distinctions and credits.

     Officiating at the certificate presentation ceremony, the Chairperson of Yan Oi Tong, Ms Ng Ming-chun, said Yan Oi Tong has been serving the Hong Kong community with the mission of building a prosperous Hong Kong and raising hope to facilitate diverse learning and enhance youth development. Likewise, the CSD conducts rehabilitation schemes and reforms young persons in custody through education, vocational training, discipline training and character development. With the support of the CSD, they are able to set new life goals and prepare well for their reintegration into society to make contributions in future. Ms Ng noted that these goals are in line with the aims of Yan Oi Tong.
     
     During the ceremony, a rehabilitated person discharged from CCCI shared his learning experience in preparing for the HKDSE Examination during his sentence in the institution, culminating in his admission to a post-secondary programme after release.
  
     A band formed by persons in custody at CCCI sang to convey their love to their families. Parent representatives also spoke of the happiness they felt when seeing their son undergo positive changes during training in CCCI.

     Also attending the ceremony were the Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Sin Yat-kin, representatives of non-governmental and community organisations, community leaders and parents of the certificate recipients.

     CCCI has a capacity of 192 penal places for young male offenders aged from 14 to under 21 who are ordered by court to undergo the training centre programme for an indeterminate period of six months to three years.

     The department provides half-day education programmes and half-day vocational training for offenders to help them to rehabilitate and to prepare for their reintegration into society.
