Correctional officers stopped a female person in custody from assaulting several staff members in Nei Kwu Correctional Institution today (December 25).
At 9am, the 21-year-old person in custody suddenly turned emotional during an interview in the interview room and punched at the neck of a staff member. Officers at scene immediately stopped her. After the arrival of reinforcement staff, the person in custody continued to put up a struggle. She bit the right arm of an officer and scratched the right hand of another. She was gradually calmed down by staff.
The person in custody and three staff members were taken to the centre hospital for treatment.
The three staff members sustained slight injuries on neck, arms and hands respectively. The person in custody was not injured. As she remained emotionally unstable, the person in custody was transferred to a public hospital for further examination upon medical advice.
The case has been reported to Police for follow up action.
The person in custody was serving sentence for offences of possession of dangerous drugs and assaulting police.
