Correctional officers stop person in custody from self-harm

     Correctional officers stopped a person in custody from committing self-harm at Tai Lam Correctional Institution today (February 1).

     At 3pm, the 29-year-old male person in custody suddenly turned emotional in a ward inside the centre hospital. He suddenly hit his head several times against a plastic bedside table. The officers at the scene immediately stopped him and gave him medical examination.

     The person in custody sustained injury to his forehead and was sent to a public hospital for further examination after treatment by a medical officer at the centre hospital. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services.

     The person in custody was convicted of the offences of blackmail and possession of dangerous drugs.
