Correctional officers stop suicide attempt by person in custody

Correctional officers stopped a male person in custody from attempting suicide by hanging at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre this morning (July 14).

At 2.44am, a correctional officer found a 41-year-old male person in custody attempting to hang himself with a bed sheet tied to the grille of the cell gate. The officer immediately stopped him and called for reinforcements.

Reinforcement staff arrived at the scene and entered the cell immediately to render emergency treatment. The person in custody was conscious at the time and was later transferred to a public hospital for further examination and treatment. The case will be followed up by a clinical psychologist of the Correctional Services Department (CSD).

A spokesman for the CSD said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of rape.
