A 43-year-old male person in custody of Stanley Prison reported chest pain in his single cell to the on-duty correctional officer at 11.48pm yesterday (October 2). He was immediately examined by the institution nursing staff and was subsequently arranged to the centre hospital for further observation. Meanwhile, his condition suddenly deteriorated and was found collapsed.
The officer immediately provided first aid treatment to him and summoned ambulance. The medical officer of the centre hospital also arrived and provided treatment. The person in custody was then referred to a public hospital for emergency rescue. He was certified dead at 1.50am today (October 3).
A spokesperson for the Correctional Services Department said the case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The person in custody has drug abuse record and was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs in 2014.
