Correctional officers stop person in custody from self-harm

     Correctional officers stopped a person in custody from hurting himself at Tong Fuk Correctional Institution yesterday (October 16).

     At 5.18pm, the 33-year-old male person in custody was arranged to centre hospital for observation and counselling due to emotional problem. In the centre hospital, he suddenly became emotional and banged his head against a trolley for keeping medical equipment. The officers at the scene immediately stopped him.

     The person in custody sustained injury to his forehead. After examination and treatment by the medical officer of the centre hospital, he was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up the case.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

     The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.
