Correctional Services officers stopped a male remand person in custody hurting himself at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (May 11).
At 8.15pm, the 33-year-old remand person in custody was found banging his head against the grill gate in a cell. An officer patrolling outside the cell immediately shouted to stop him and called for reinforcements. While being escorted away from the scene, the remand person in custody suddenly turned emotional and put up strong resistance. The officers warned him to stop but the warning was in vain. In order to prevent the person in custody from hurting himself, OC foam was applied to subdue him.
The remand person in custody received examination by the medical officer in the centre hospital and he was found to have sustained injuries to his head and hands. He was then transferred to a public hospital for further examination and treatment. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The person in custody was remanded for the offence of theft.
