An 82-year-old male person in custody at Stanley Prison felt chest pain last night (January 4). He was sent to a public hospital and was subsequently certified dead this morning (January 5).
The person in custody suffered from hypertension and diabetes mellitus and required regular follow-up by an institutional Medical Officer. At 8.22pm yesterday, he felt chest pain and was sent to the centre hospital for treatment. Upon examination and treatment, the institutional Medical Officer referred him to a public hospital for further treatment. He was conscious at the time.
Having received treatment at the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital, he was sent to the custodial ward for observation.
At 5.20am today, his condition suddenly deteriorated and he was certified dead at 6.12am.
The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The person in custody was sentenced for the offence of theft in February 2015.
