The Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (July 8) held the Stanley Prison 80th Anniversary Open Day at the Staff Training Institute and the Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum in Stanley to tie in with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, Cardinal John Tong; the Chairman of the District Fight Crime Committee (Southern District), Dr James Chan; the Supervisor of the Hong Kong Sea School, Mr Cowen Chiu; Southern District Council member Mrs Chan Lee Pui-ying; the Principal of St Stephen's College, Ms Carol Yang; the Assistant Commissioner of Correctional Services (Human Resource), Ms Ng Sau-wai; and the Chief Superintendent (Stanley Prison), Mr Chan Wai-kin, officiated at the opening ceremony for the event.
Students, voluntary services organisations, clients of non-governmental organisations, CSD staff and their family members participated in the event and learned about the history of Stanley Prison and recruitment training.
To introduce the various facets of Stanley Prison, tours with four different routes covering aspects including catering and healthcare, dormitories and the Special Unit, rehabilitation and community education by way of a virtual reality system were arranged for visitors. Also, an exhibition showcased the history and important milestones of Stanley Prison through exhibition boards and video clips. Visitors also took photos next to three-dimensional scenes of Stanley Prison set up at the Museum. Since its establishment in 1937, Stanley Prison has witnessed different eras and Hong Kong's development after its return to China. The CSD has strived to protect the public and prevent crime by ensuring a safe custodial environment, creating rehabilitation opportunities in collaboration with community stakeholders, and promoting law abiding and inclusive values through community education.
Weapons and anti-riot equipment were on display for visitors. There was also information on recruitment training as well as games developed with virtual reality technology for the public to a gain better understanding of the recruit training.
A joint foot drill performance was presented by members of the Civil Aid Service pipe band and the CSD pipe band, as well as the CSD Guard of Honour. Visitors could also enjoy performances by the Dog Unit and tactical demonstrations.
Established in 1937 and located at Tung Tau Wan Road, Stanley, Stanley Prison is a maximum security institution which houses male adult persons in custody and has 1,511 certified accommodation places. The prison is operated under the Prisons Ordinance (Cap. 234).
