Correctional Services Department combats illicit activities

     To curb gambling and other illicit activities in penal institutions, the Correctional Services Department (CSD) has strengthened intelligence collection and adopted corresponding measures.

     A series of measures were recently implemented in Stanley Prison to combat illicit activities including gambling and preparing food by using food ingredients without authority. As revealed by intelligence, some persons in custody attempted to incite fellow persons in custody to engage in collective activities with a view to acting against the institution management during the Easter holidays. The department launched a raid operation, with concerted efforts from the Escort and Support Group and Regional Response Team, to search the targeted locations and persons in custody in Stanley Prison on March 27 and yesterday (March 28). During the operation, prohibited articles and betting records were seized. Up to now, 18 persons in custody who were in possession of unauthorised articles or suspected to have been involved in the illicit activities have been removed from association for investigation. The atmosphere at Stanley Prison is currently stable. The CSD will continue to closely monitor any developments and the activities of the persons in custody concerned.

     In order to assist persons in custody to rehabilitate in a safe and orderly environment, the CSD spares no effort in combating illicit activities of all kinds in its institutions.

     Stanley Prison is a maximum security prison for the detention of male adult persons in custody including those who committed serious offences.
