The Correctional Services Department (CSD) held an open day at the Hong Kong Correctional Services Academy today (April 15), the National Security Education Day, to deepen the public's understanding of national security and the work of the department, including its work and effectiveness in safeguarding national security. The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, attended the open day and officiated at the awards presentation ceremony of the Safeguarding National Security Cup and the Disciplined Forces National Security Education Promotion Competition held at the Academy.
Accompanied by the Secretary for Security, Mr Tang Ping-keung, and the Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Wong Kwok-hing, Mr Chan first visited the Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum – Community Education Experience Centre. With the theme of "Home, Country and Correction", the centre features interactive games and multimedia items to promote to the public, especially young people, national security, national education, the message of leading a law-abiding life, as well as supporting offender rehabilitation.
Mr Chan then visited the "Rehabilitation Express" (RehEx) promotion vehicle, during which he chatted with children attending the open day and watched them participating in games. The RehEx promotion vehicle visits primary schools in various districts every month to enhance students' awareness of national security, sense of responsibility and correct values, and to teach them to safeguard our country and home, and become law-abiding citizens through the interactive electronic games installed in the vehicle.
Mr Chan later officiated at the awards presentation ceremony of the Safeguarding National Security Cup and the Disciplined Forces National Security Education Promotion Competition at the Academy.
The open day programme today included demonstrations by its Dog Unit and the Regional Response Team, a Chinese-style foot drill demonstration by the Guard of Honour and a music performance by the Marching Band. Exhibitions and game booths on national security, the Constitution and the Basic Law were also set up.
In addition, members of the public could visit the Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum – the Community Education Experience Centre and the promotion vehicle, RehEx. A number of "smart training" facilities, such as the "E-theatre" and the Virtual Reality Training Facility were also opened for visitors. By holding the open day, the CSD hopes to enhance the public's national security and law-abiding awareness, as well as their understanding of the effectiveness of CSD's daily work and efforts in safeguarding national security from different perspectives.
The CSD will remain steadfast as the last element in the criminal justice system and dedicated to safeguarding national security under the leadership of the Security Bureau.
