A 36-year-old inmate of Stanley Prison was found by staff hanging in his cell with strings made of torn bed sheet near midnight yesterday (February 6).
First aid was immediately given at the scene. The inmate was then sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, where he was certified dead at 00.48am.
Police and the inmate's family have been informed of the incident and an inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The inmate, surnamed Choi, was convicted of trafficking a dangerous drug and sentenced to imprisonment of 40 months. He was admitted to Stanley Prison in January 2010.
