A 42-year-old inmate of Stanley Prison was found by staff hanging in his cell with strings made of a torn bed sheet at around 5.30am today (May 27).
First aid was immediately given at the scene. The inmate was then sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, where he was certified dead at 6.30am.
Police and the inmate's family have been informed of the incident and an inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The inmate, surnamed Cheung, was convicted of wounding with intent and sentenced to imprisonment for four years. He was admitted to Stanley Prison in May 2010.
