A patrolling officer of Correctional Services Department (CSD) prevented an inmate from attempting to hang himself with bed sheet in a cell in Stanley Prison at around 11pm yesterday (May 19).
The inmate was then sent to the institution hospital for examination and treatment. He was conscious and had no external injury. He will be attended by the department's clinical psychologist for psychological assessment.
A spokesperson for CSD said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicides or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangement, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid service."
The 31-year-old inmate has been serving his sentence since 2000.
