Patrolling officers of Correctional Services Department (CSD) prevented two female inmates from attempting to hang themselves separately with bed sheets in their dormitory in Tai Lam Centre for Women yesterday evening (May 25).
The inmates were then sent to the institution hospital for examination and treatment. They were conscious at the time. One of them had no external injuries while the other sustained superficial abrasion marks over her neck. They were then admitted into the institution hospital for close observation and will be attended to by the department's clinical psychologist for psychological assessment.
A spokesperson for CSD said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid service."
The inmates were 41 and 43 years old. They were admitted to Tai Lam Centre for Women in May this year. One of them was admitted on a charge of burglary while the other was admitted on a charge of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
