LWCI inmate attempted suicide

     An inmate of Lo Wu Correctional Institution (LWCI) was found attempting to hang herself with a bed sheet in a dormitory at around 12.50am today (June 14).

     The inmate was immediately given first-aid treatment by correctional officers. She was unconscious and sent to North District Hospital for further treatment.

     A spokesperson for Correctional Services Department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicides or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid service."

     The 32-year-old inmate has served her sentence since May this year on a charge of theft.
