A patrolling Correctional Services Department (CSD) officer prevented an inmate on remand from attempting to hang herself with her undervest in her cell in Tai Lam Centre for Women at around 10pm last night (June 22).
The inmate on remand was then sent to the institution hospital for examination and treatment. She was conscious at that time and had no external injury. She will be attended by the department's clinical psychologist for assessment.
A CSD spokesperson said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The 37-year-old woman was admitted to Tai Lam Centre for Women in June on a charge of theft.
