Officers of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) detected and prevented an inmate from harming himself further with a pair of scissors in a garment workshop in Stanley Prison at around 11.00am today (August 13).
The inmate was immediately given examination and treatment at the institution hospital and then sent to Queen Mary Hospital for further examination. He was conscious and sustained external injury on his neck and fingers. He will be attended by the department's clinical psychologist for psychological assessment.
A spokesperson for the CSD said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicides or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid service."
The 23-year-old inmate was admitted to correctional institution in July 2010.
