A patrolling Correctional Services Department (CSD) officer prevented an inmate on remand from attempting to hang herself with her bed sheet in the hospital in Tai Lam Centre for Women at around 00.30am today (January 2).
The inmate on remand was conscious and had no external injury. She will be attended by the department's clinical psychologist for assessment.
A CSD spokesperson said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The 39-year-old woman was admitted to Tai Lam Centre for Women on December 28, 2011 on a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
