A Correctional Services Department (CSD) officer stopped a suicide attempt by an inmate at Stanley Prison yesterday evening (July 16).
The 61-year-old inmate was found hanging himself with a bed sheet inside his single cell around 8pm. Both of his hands were tied up with a towel. Following interception, the officer immediately gave him first aid treatment. The man, in a conscious condition, was then sent to the prison hospital for further examination and treatment.
A CSD spokesperson said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The man, who had a past record of harming himself, was imprisoned for life on a charge of murder in 2003.
