Correctional officers seized 12 packs of suspected dangerous drugs during a security check from an inmate on remand at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (September 18), thereby stopping an attempt to smuggle dangerous drugs into correctional institutions.
The case has been reported to the Police for investigation. The male inmate, aged 37, was remanded yesterday for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
A Correctional Services Department spokesperson said, "With an effective mechanism to collect intelligence, the department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."
There have been 120 seizures of dangerous drugs so far this year, as at today. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
