Correctional staff stop inmate attempting self-harm Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped an inmate attempting self-harm at Lo Wu Correctional Institution this morning (October 19). At around 1am today, correctional officers found the 35-year-old female inmate banging her head repeatedly against a plastic board inside the hospital ward. She was believed to have harmed herself out of emotional distress. To prevent further self-harm, the officers stopped her immediately. She was conscious at the time and only sustained minor injuries. She was subsequently transferred to the government hospital for observation and treatment. A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services." The inmate was serving a two-month sentence for theft.
