Correctional staff intercept dangerous drugs

Correctional Services staff seized a small quantity of suspected dangerous drugs in a letter posted to an inmate at Nei Kwu Correctional Institution yesterday (October 30), hence stopping an attempt to smuggle dangerous drugs into correctional institutions.

At about 9am yesterday the member of staff, while conducting a security check, discovered a small amount of white powder wrapped inside aluminium foil in the letter. The case was reported to the Police for further investigation.

A female, aged 40, was convicted of theft and admitted to the institution for drug treatment.

A spokesperson for the Department said, "With effective mechanisms for collecting intelligence, the department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

There have been 134 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most seizures were made in reception centres.
