Correctional officers stop remand inmate attempting self-harm

Correctional services officers stopped a remand inmate attempting to hurt himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (March 20).

At around 7am, an officer found the 54-year-old male remand inmate, who acted suspiciously, had tied a uniform shirt to the grille gate of his cell, and the remand inmate was suspected to be attempting to hurt himself. The officer stopped the remand inmate immediately and took him to the centre hospital for medical examination. The inmate was later transferred to a public hospital for further examination and treatment.

A spokesman for the department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The remand inmate was charged with an offence of using an identity card relating to another person.
