Correctional Services officers stopped an inmate from self-harm at Lai Chi Rehabilitation Centre yesterday (May 3).
At about 7.40pm, an officer found the 17-year-old male inmate trying to harm himself by tying his shoelaces around his neck inside a hospital ward. The officer immediately ordered the inmate to stop and called for reinforcement.
The inmate was conscious at the time. After examination by medical staff, he was transferred to a public hospital for further treatment, and was subsequently discharged. The inmate was transferred to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for further assessment.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The inmate was sentenced to the rehabilitation centre for the offence of theft.
