An inmate of the Lai King Correctional Institution harmed herself due to emotional distress at around 7pm yesterday (May 28).
During a daily routine inmate body-mark check around 6.40am today (May 29), the 16-year-old female inmate was found to have bruises on her right fist. Upon enquiry, she confessed that she hit her fist on the dormitory wall the previous night. She was taken to the institution's hospital for medical treatment and received psychological counselling later.
A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services; while the routine body-mark check is one of the measures to detect inmates' self-harm acts."
The inmate was sentenced to the Training Centre for breach of probation order.
