Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs into reception centre

     Correctional officers seized a quantity of suspected dangerous drugs from a male remand inmate at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (August 23).

     The male remand inmate, aged 55, underwent X-ray body scanning on his admission to the centre yesterday (August 22) and was suspected to have swallowed dangerous drugs.

     Until about 7.55pm today, the male remand inmate was found to have discharged nine small packs of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheet. The inmate was remanded for the offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     A spokesperson for the department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

     There have been 66 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
