Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs into institution

     Correctional officers at Tai Lam Centre for Women intercepted 20 small packs of suspected dangerous drugs from a newly admitted remand inmate today (September 22).

     Upon admission to the institution yesterday, the 45-year-old female remand inmate admitted to correctional officers that she had swallowed a quantity of suspected dangerous drugs.  She was then put under isolation.  Until around 4.30pm today, she discharged a total of 20 small packs of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheet. The woman was remanded for an offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

     The case has been reported to the Police.

     A spokesperson for the department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

     There have been 73 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
