Correctional officers rescued a female remand inmate who attempted to hang herself in Tai Lam Centre for Women yesterday (October 21).
At about 7.47pm, an on-duty officer found the 41-year-old female remand inmate attempting to hang herself with a bed sheet tied to the grille bars of her cell. The officer summoned reinforcement immediately.
Reinforcement staff entered the cell and stopped the woman, who was conscious at the time. After treatment by an institutional medical officer, she was transferred to a government hospital for further examination. A departmental clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The inmate was on remand for the offence of murder.
